Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,
When you tell some Islamic ruling to the educated youth, the most frequently asked question you encounter is why? Why do you we need to do purdah, why do we need to keep a beard, why are we not allowed to take pictures, etc. a similar “why” is: why do we need to slaughter an animal on Eid-ul-Adha? Why not just give the same amount of money to the poor? Well, a similar question was asked by the sahaba of Rasulullah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم Why do we make Qurbani? They asked and the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم replied: al-hajj, al-ajj wa thajj.” That Hajj is raising the name of Allah سبحانہ وتعالی , saying ‘labbayk’ to Him, and spilling blood of animals in His name. Hadhrat Ibrahim علیہ السلام was ordered to sacrifice his most precious thing his son. We, mercifully, have not been asked for such a trial. Instead we are to sacrifice an animal to symbolize that we, as Muslim, are ready to give up all our worldly belongings for His sake, be it our relatives, our wealth, or our own lives.
