Those who spend their wealth by night and day, secretly and openly, verily their reward is with their Lord. No fear will come upon them neither shall they grieve. (Surah Al-Baqarah: 274)

In whatever way a person spends his wealth for the pleasure of Allah, he shall receive his full reward from Him in the Hereafter. Then he shall not lament his charitable acts like those who misused their wealth in sinful channels.
It is learnt from this verse that the charity given in public will also be rewarded if it is devoid of ostentation, just as that given secretly. Ostentation is the intention of the heart, not an apparent action.
