“Indeed those who disbelieve, forbid (others) from Allah’s path and from the Masjid-ul-Haram, which We have appointed for the people, residents and visitors being equal therein, and whoever intends to unjustly perpetrate an act of irreligiousness  there, We shall let him taste a painful punishment.” (Surah Al Hajj: 25)

The polytheists of Makkah prevented the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم and the Muslims from performing their Salah in the Masjid-ul-Haram because they were the custodians of it. Even after the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم returned in the 6th year after Hijrah to perform Umrah, they did not allow him entry into the Masjid-ul-Haram.
