Shaikul Hind Hazrat Maulana Mahmood ul Hasan رحمہ اللہ was the first student of Darul Uloom Deoband. He enjoyed a high position in learning, knowledge and righteousness. When he was a teacher of hadith at Darul Uloom his monthly salary was Rs. 10. As he gained experience and got older the advisory council decided that considering his age, experience and needs his salary should be increased to Rs. 15. When the salary was disbursed and Shaikhul Hind got his salary he asked why he was given Rs. 15. People told him that the advisory council had decided to increase his salary. He refused to accept the salary and wrote a letter to the Head of Darul Uloom in which he wrote, “You have increased my salary although I have become old now. In the past I had the energy to teach for 2 to 3 hours. I am not able to do that anymore. As I am giving less time then before an increase in salary is not justified. Therefore this increase should be withdrawn and my salary be prefixed at Rs. 10.
People came to him and said that you are doing this due to your piety but it would make things difficult for other people, their increases will also be stopped. Therefore you should accept it. But he did not because he thought that this life is very short and this money should not become a cause of disgrace in front of Allah.
Darul Uloom Deoband was not like the usual university where a teacher teaches and a student learns and that’s it. It was provided life through such examples of piety and righteousness.
